Three-Run Tenth Pushes Baseball Past Seton Hall, 8-7

OMAHA, Neb. - Propelled by three runs in the bottom of the tenth, the Creighton Baseball team defeated Seton Hall 8-7 in ten innings on Saturday, May 4.

Creighton moved to 25-14-1 with the win and 10-2 in BIG EAST play, clinching a berth in the BIG EAST clinching a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament.  Seton Hall, meanwhile, fell to 33-11 overall and 7-5 in conference play. 

Deadlocked in a 5-5 affair as the tenth inning began, Seton Hall appeared to seize control scoring two runs on four singles and an intentional pass to take a 7-5 lead. 

The Bluejays, however, refused to give up in their half. Senior Brad McKewon ripped a single through the left side, then back-to-back walks to sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald and junior Jake Peter loaded the bases with no outs.  After senior Mike Gerber went down on strikes, sophomore Reagan Fowler picked up his squad with a two-run single to center to tie the game at 7-7.  

Moments later, with Nicky Lopez at the dish, Peter and Fowler took off.  Peter slid into third safely as the ball bounced away from Pirate third baseman Kyle Grimm.  Peter quickly raced toward the plate, sliding in under the tag to give Creighton the win. 

The Bluejays comeback in the tenth was indicative of the entire game.  Seton Hall opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first by Sal Annunziata.  From that point the Bluejays continued to peck their way back into the game. 

Creighton got on the board in the third as freshman Daniel Woodrow slapped a triple into right field and scored on a sac fly from McKewon.  

After Seton Hall got the run back in the top of the fourth, the Bluejays answered as Fowler was hit by a pitch and scored via an RBI double from senior Ben Lahn.  

Creighton tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth on a single from McKewon, a sacrfice by Fitzgerald an an RBI double from Peter. 

The Pirates came right back with two unearned runs in the sixth to make it 5-3.  Fowler opened another rally in the seventh with a leadoff single, then scored on a two-out double to left by senior Jerry Mitchell.  After two walks loaded the bases, McKewon was hit by a pitch to force in Mitchell with the tying run. 

Sophomore Nick Highberger picked up the win (2-0), allowing two runs on four hits in two innings of relief.  Seton Hall's Steven Lombardi, meanwhile, took the loss (0-2) as he surrendered three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.

The Bluejays return to action on Friday, May 9 as Creighton opens a three-game series at St. John's at 5 pm. 

Notes: Seton Hall's head coach Rob Sheppard was thrown out of the game in the middle of the ninth inning
