Baseball Downed by Kansas State, 8-5
Release: 03/29/2014

OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton baseball team suffered an 8-5 loss to Kansas State on Saturday, March 29.

The loss dropped the Bluejays to 12-8-1 on the season, while the Wildcats moved to 16-10.

Kansas State took the lead in the opening frame with a single run, scoring on three straight hits after the first two men got out.

The two squads traded single runs in the third and the fourth as Creighton scored on an RBI single from freshman Nicky Lopez in the third and a sacrifice fly by senior Ben Lahn in the fourth.

The Wildcats pushed their lead to 5-2 with a pair in the top of the fifth, but junior Jake Peter laced a two-out RBI single to left to make it 5-3.

After K-State got the run back in the top of the sixth, the Bluejays came charging in response with two via a pinch-hit RBI ground out from sophomore Brett Murray and an RBI double from sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald

Down 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh Creighton looked poised to at least tie the game as Lopez opened the inning with a single and Peter reached on an error when Kansas State catcher hit Peter with a throw on a sacrifice bunt. Unfortunately Peter was called for obstruction and the Bluejays were unable to score.

The Wildcats tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth to secure the win.

Kansas State starter, Jared Moore, nabbed the win (5-1) allowing five runs on six hits in five innings, while Creighton's Austin Groth took the loss (1-2).  Groth surrendered five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.

Creighton and Kansas State will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday, March 30 at 1 pm.
