CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Led by six strong innings from starter Matt Warren, the Creighton baseball team posted its fourth consecutive win. Topping Charlotte 3-1 on Saturday, March 1. The win pushed Creighton to 4-4 on the season, while Charlotte fell to 2-6.
Down 1-0 after Charlotte plated a run in the fourth, Creighton responded quickly with two runs in the top of the fifth. Brandon Mikulka reached first on an error by Charlotte shortstop, Derek Gallello, to open the frame. Freshman Nicky Lopez put runners at the corners with a single through the left side. Creighton's next batter, senior Brad McKewon, bounced a grounder to short. Lopez was forced at second, but McKewon earned the RBI by beating the relay throw to the bag at first. Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald continued the rally with a bunt single. A throwing error by the Charlotte catcher sent McKewon to third, then junior Jake Peter gave Creighton the lead with a sacrifice fly to center.
The scored remained 2-1 into the top of the ninth, when McKewon provided an insurance run with his first home run of the season over the left field wall.
On the mound, Warren delivered the best start of the young season for the Bluejays as he limited Charlotte to one run on four hits and one walk in six innings to earn his second win (2-0) of the season. Sophomore John Oltman recorded four flawless outs, before giving way to Nick Highberger to finish off the eighth inning.
Staked to a 3-1 lead, senior Bryan Sova worked around two hits for his first save of 2014.
Creighton looks to complete the sweep of the 49ers on Sunday, March 2 at 12 pm (CT).
