Baseball Off For Pivotal Series at Wichita State

OMAHA, Neb. - The Bluejays are off to Kansas for their final MVC battle with the Wichita State Shockers in a pivotal battle for conference seeding in the upcoming MVC Tournament.

The Road So Far
At 26-13, the Jays have won their last two games and sit in fourth place in the Missouri Valley Conference at 9-6.  On Wednesday night the Bluejays downed South Dakota State, 7-1, behind a dominant performacne from freshman Matt Warren.

Now
Creighton heads to Kansas for another critical MVC series with Wichita State. The Shockers are atop the MVC at 14-4, but hold just a 133 rpi ranking.  

The Road Ahead
The Bluejays close the regular season next week with a bang as Creighton hosts Nebraska on Tuesday, May 14 and welcomes in Missouri State for the Bluejays final MVC series in Creighton history.

Jays vs. Wichita State
Wichita State leads the overall sereis with Creighton, 112-45-1.  Under coach Servais the Bluejays are 14-23 against Wichita State.  Last season, the Shockers took two of the three meetings between the two squads.  The last time the Jays won a series in Wichita was in 2003.

Scouting the Shockers (30-22, 14-4 Summit)
Coming off a weekend series sweep of rival, Missouri State, the Shockers dropped a midweek battle with Kansas on Tuesday, 7-5.  Wichita State has won seven of its last 10 games and currently hold the tiebreaker over Illinois State at the top of the MVC standings.

Offensively the Shockers are hitting .287 as a team, led by junior Garrett Bayliff (.355) and sophomores Tyler Baker (.331) as well as Casey Gillaspie (.307).  Baker leads WSU with 36 RBI on the season, while Gillaspie boasts a team-high 41 runs scored.  Wichita State has plated 293 runs in 52 games (5.6 runs per game).  

On the mound the Shockers lean on ace Cale Elam as well as a strong bullpen.  Elam is 5-2 with a 2.26 ERA.  He has a team-high 59 strikeouts on the
season.  In the pen the Shockers have called upon Aaron LaBrie and Brandon Peterson 20 and 21 times respectively.  LaBrie is 3-1 with a 1.03 ERA in 43.2 innings, while Peterson has a 1.41 ERA and a 2-1 mark in 32 innings.

Defensive is one area the Shockers are not as strong, committing 52 errors (an average of one per game).

Freshman Matt Warren’s 7.2 inning performance on Tuesday, May 8th was the longest midweek outing by a starter since head coach Ed Servais took over the Creighton program in 2004.

Making the Most of an Opportunity
Freshman Tommy Clouthier got a spot start at second base Tuesday as the Jays opted to move sophomore Jake Peter to the DH.  Coming off his first hit as a Jay on Sunday, May 5, Clouthier was 1-for-2 with a run scored and drove in the game-winning RBI in the Bluejays’ 7-1 win over South Dakota State.
