Bluejays Fall to Illinois State, 2-1, in MVC Semifinals
Release: 11/02/2012

OMAHA, Neb -- The Creighton women's soccer team ended its season with one of their best showings, but fell to Illinois State 2-1 on Friday, Nov. 2 in the Missouri Valley Championship Semifinals.

The loss ended the Jays' 2012 season at 3-13-3, while the second seeded Redbirds moved to 12-4-2.

Both Illinois State goals came from sophomore Rachel Tejada, who extended her conference lead to 17 goals on the season.

Tejada gave the Redbirds a 1-0 lead early in the opening period with a goal from 25 yards at the 5:21 mark.  The two-time MVC Player of the Year, beat her defender to the center of the field and blasted a shot into the upper right corner of the net.

Trailing 1-0, Creighton seemed to relax and began to assert themselves.  The Jays began to control possession and forced Illinois State keeper, Aryn Newsome, into three saves in the first half.

Creighton finally broke through in the 37th minute.  Freshman Kaelyn Korte was driving toward the goal but was dragged down just outside the box.  Senior Gabriela Guillén claimed the subsequent free kick.  The Costa Rican native exuded confidence as she lined up her shot, then delivered a picture perfect goal over the wall an into the upper left corner of the net to tie the match at 1-1.

It was the first goal for Creighton in 433:37, dating back to a 3-2 loss to Drake on Oct. 11.

The match remained tied at 1-1 into halftime.

In the second half, senior keeper Katie Jo Swanson made two spectacular saves to prevent the Redbirds from taking the lead, including one in the 79th minute that was a one-on-one situation against Tejada.  Unfortunately, Tejada and Illinois State broke through on final time in the 81st minute.

This time Tejada drew Swanson out and forced her into a diving attempt.  Tejada was able to stay on her feet by slipping to the right then beat junior Kelsey O'Donnell, who tried to make a team save.

Illinois State outshot Creighton 20-14 in the match, including a 12-8 edge in the second half.  Creighton, meanwhile, held the edge on corners 5-2.

Illinois State moves on to face No. 5 Indiana State in the MVC Championship Final at 3:00 p.m.  Indiana State defeated No. 1 Evansville in the first MVC Semifinal match on Friday to advance to the Championship match.
