Creighton Falls to Indiana State, 3-1

TERRA HAUTE, Ind. - The Creighton women's soccer team fell at Indiana State, 3-1, on Friday, Oct. 5.

The loss dropped the Jays to 3-8-2 on the season and 0-2-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC).  Indiana State, meanwhile, moved to 6-7-1 overall and 1-1 in the MVC.

Battling a stifling rain as well as the Sycamores, the Jays fell behind early as Indiana State's Aubrie Musselman punched in her third goal of the season just eight minutes into the match.  Musselman fielded a pass from Kourtney Vassar along the right wing and sent it to the back post to give the Sycamores a 1-0 advantage.

The Bluejays came storming back moments later as Creighton earned a corner kick along the left side.  Freshman Jill Richgels sent the ball in for a header but Indiana State was able to win the ball, sending it out to right.  Freshman Alyssa Kohmetscher threw in to senior Brittney Neumann, who returned it to Kohmetscher.  The next pass found Richgels open from 30 yards away along the right side.  Richgels blasted the shot in for her first goal of the year, knotting the match at 1-1 in the 12th minute.

Richgels blast, unfortunately, was one of just four shots for Creighton in the opening period.  Indiana State rifled off nine shots in the opening frame, reclaiming the lead late in the period.

As the 38th minute opened the Sycamores took a 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal from Shelby Troyer from 35 yards away.

The score remained 2-1 through halftime and well into the second period.  The Jays raised their intensity as the minutes continued to tick away, but Indiana State's keeper Erin Mitchell was equal to the challenge as she kept Creighton off the board in the second period.

In the closing moments, Indiana State salted away the match with a goal from Taylor Reed in the 84th minute.

Indiana State outshot Creighton 13-9 in the match and finished with a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Mitchell finished with two saves as did Creighton senior, Katie Jo Swanson.

Creighton returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 11 as the Jays host Drake at 7 p.m. in Morrison Stadium.  The match will be the Jays' Pink Out match in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
