OMAHA, Neb. - Freshman Kaelyn Korte's first goal as a Jay led the Creighton women's soccer team past South Dakota State, 2-1, on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
With the win the Jays moved to 3-5-2 on the season, while South Dakota State fell to 2-6-1.
Senior Brittney Neumann got the Jays on the board late in the first half, taking a pass on the left side from Korte. Neumann raced past two South Dakota State defenders into the middle and blasted a shot by Jackrabbit keeper Elisa Stamatakis at 39:57. It was Neumann's fourth goal of the season and 28th as a Jay.
The 1-0 lead, however, did not last long as South Dakota State evened the game at 1-1 in the 44th minutes. Stacy Guijarro scored the Jackrabbit goal, taking a pass from Sheridon Newberry then pushing it in at 43:40.
The match went to halftime tied at 1-1. South Dakota State held a 9-5 edge in shots, while Creighton created three corner kicks to just one for the Jackrabbits.
South Dakota State controlled possession through the opening 15-20 minutes of the second period, but Creighton took advantage of an opportunity in the 67th minute.
Junior Lauren Cingoranelli set things in motion as she found Korte along the left side of the field, 15 yards outside the goal. Korte took two steps and fired home her first goal as a Jay, giving her three points on the night.
Staked to a 2-1 lead, the Jays were able to frustrate the Jackrabbits, holding South Dakota State to just five shots in the second period.
South Dakota State's best chance to tie the game a second time came with just under eight minutes remaining. Senior keeper Katie Jo Swanson came out to deny a shot to South Dakota State, but the ball glanced off her body. The ball bounced to Guijarro, who prepared to fire. This time, however, sophomore Madelyn Buckner came charging for a team save to preserve the 2-1 lead.
Swanson finished the game with nine saves for the Jays, while Stamatakis finished with two saves for the Jackrabbits.
South Dakota State finished the match with a 14-8 lead in shots, while Creighton held a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 23 as the Bluejays host Oral Roberts at 1 p.m. in Morrison Stadium.
