The Creighton women's soccer team faces UMKC in a single match on Thursday, Sept. 13 in Morrison Stadium.
Scouting the Creighton Bluejays (2-5-1):
The Jays split two contests last week, besting local rival Nebraska Omaha 4-1 on Friday, Sept. 7 and falling at Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 9
The four goal outburst was the largest scoring total of the season for Creighton, keyed by two goals from senior Brittney Neumann. The Omaha native scored the first and third goals of the contest. Neumann’s first goal was blasted through the keeper, while she dashed on a breakaway from midfield for her second goal. Neumann leads the Bluejays with three goals this season, giving her 27 in her career to move her into a tie for fourth all-time for the Jays. Neumann also climbed the Creighton ranks for multiple matches, moving into a tie for second with seven.
Neumann’s performance earned her the Missouri Valley Offensive Player of the Week honor. It is the fifth time that Neumann has earned the award.
Not to be outdone, senior keeper Katie Jo Swanson set a career-high with 11 saves in the 1-0 loss to the Titans. She faced 22 saves in the contest, keeping CS Fullerton at bay until the 89th minute. Swanson has played every second in goal for the Jays this season (541:31). She has a 1.82 Goals Against Average (GAA) this season.
Scouting University of Missouri-Kansas City (2-3-2):
The Roos enter Thursday’s match following a 0-1-1 showing last week, earning a 1-1 draw with Saint Louis on Sept. 7 and dropping a 3-0 decision to Tulsa on Sunday, Sept. 9.
UMKC has shown a strong defense in 2012, posting three shutouts. The Roos have allowed just seven goals in seven matches. Junior Tyler Bare has led the UMKC offense, scoring three of the Roos’ five goals in 2012, including both game-winners.
UMKC has split its goalkeeper duties this season between senior Jami Finnell and freshman Nina Tzianos. Each player started one match last weekend, Finnell against Tulsa and Tzianos versus Saint Louis. Tzianos has had the better statistical season thus far, posting a 0.68 GAA in four matches and a 1-1-2 record in those contests.
Neumann Notches Fifth Career MVC Offensive Player of the Week Honor, First of 2012
Creighton women’s soccer senior Brittney Neumann was named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 11. This the fifth time that Neumann has earned the MVC Offensive Player of the Week honor, the last coming on Sept. 20, 2011.
The Omaha native scored two goals in the Jays’ 4-1 win over Nebraska Omaha on Friday, Sept. 7. Neumann’s first goal was blasted through the keeper to give Creighton a 1-0 lead, while she dashed on a breakaway from midfield for her second goal to make it a 3-1 contest.
Neumann leads the Jays this season in goals (3), points (7), shots (20) and shots on goal (10).
Swanson Sets New Career-High with 11 Saves
Despite a career-high 11 saves by senior goalkeeper, Katie Jo Swanson, the Creighton women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Sept. 9. Swanson’s previous best was 10 saves in 2010 on Sept. 17 against Wyoming. Twice this season, Swanson had recorded nine saves.
Neumann Climbing the Jays Scoring Ladder
Senior Brittney Neumann notched her 26th & 27th career goals on Friday, Sept. 7 in the Jays 4-1 win over Nebraska Omaha. The goals moved her into a tie for fourth place in Creighton history in goals scored, Neumann is on pace to finish her career among the top three goal scorer for the Jays. She also moved into a tie for 2nd with seven multiple goal matches.
