OMAHA, Neb. -- Emily Goldstein's goal in the 92nd minute lifted Iowa State Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 overtime win at Creighton in the Bluejays' 2012 regular-season opener.
Creighton (0-1-0) had its five-match unbeaten streak (3-0-2) in season-openers snapped, allowing a goal in a lid-lifter for the first time in 572:47 dating to Aug. 31, 2007. Iowa State improved to 2-0-0 after a weekend sweep in Omaha that included a 4-0 whitewash of Nebraska Omaha on Friday night.
Goldstein's score came in the first 100 seconds of the first overtime period, as she collected a deflected ball near the top of the box and unleashed a left-footed blast into the upper-right 90 of the goal. Goldstein, a junior, had a goal and an assist on Friday and now owns four career game-winning scores.
Iowa State outshot the hosts 24-14 for the day, but just 12-9 once Creighton played with the wind at their backs for the final 46:31. CU keeper Katie Jo Swanson had nine saves on the day, while ISU goalie Maddie Jobe had six saves for her first complete-game shutout of the year.
Creighton's best scoring chance of regulation came in the 80th minute, as Stephanie Anasi's blast from 15 yards out deflected off the crossbar. Brittney Neumann led CU with five shots on the day, including two on net.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Friday when it hosts Utah State in a 5 pm game at Morrison Stadium. The Aggies are coached by former Bluejay assistant Heather Cairns.
NOTES: Creighton had shut out each of its previous four season-opening opponents, last allowing a goal at the 8:44 mark on Aug. 31, 2007 in a 2-1 win vs. Northern Colorado ... Iowa State leads the all-time series with Creighton, 4-0-1, with each win by a single goal ... Each of Creighton's three exhibition games ended in ties, though overtime wasn't played in any of them.
