Women's Soccer Releases 2012 Schedule
OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's soccer team will play four teams from the 2011 NCAA Tournament in the fall of 2012, highlighted by a trip to Elite Eight finalist Oklahoma State. The Bluejays will play nine home matches this fall, including three Missouri Valley Conference regular-season matches at Morrison Stadium.
"This is the most challenging schedule we have put together here in my tenure" said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We will be playing four NCAA Tournament teams, and two of those on the road against Kansas and top-five Oklahoma State. We also play Utah State and PAC 12 Arizona. With a young team, this will prepare them for the tough MVC schedule. We are excited to get going!"
The women's soccer team will travel to Minnesota to play a pair of pre-season exhibition matches prior to the start of the regular-season. A match in Blaine, Minn., against North Dakota State on August 11 will be followed by a single match at Minnesota-State Mankato on August 14.
The Jays open the regular season with a pair of games at Morrison Stadium. The season kicks off on Sunday, Aug. 19, when the Jays welcome Iowa State, just one of three Big 12 teams on the Bluejay schedule next season. A Friday, Aug. 24 match against Utah State will be the final August home match for the Jays.
Creighton travels to Oklahoma State on Sunday, Aug. 26. The Cowgirls made it to the Elite Eight last season, entering the tournament as a No. 2 seed. Creighton played host to OK State last season, falling 1-0, with the lone goal coming in the 64th minute of play.
The Bluejays stay on the road for another pair of games. A midweek game at South Dakota on Aug. 28 will be followed by a meeting with Kansas on Aug. 31. The Jayhawks also made it to the 2011 NCAA Tournament, falling in the first round to Georgia.
The Bluejays host Arizona on Sunday, Sept. 2, marking the first time since a 2-0 loss in 2007 the Jays will play the Wildcats. Creighton travels to cross-town rival Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, Sept. 7 before traveling to Cal State-Fullerton on Sunday, Sept. 9. It marks the return trip from when Fullerton traveled to Creighton in 2010, a 3-0 Bluejay win.
Creighton will remain home for a pair of midweek games, hosting UMKC on Thursday, Sept. 13 and a week later welcoming South Dakota State.
The Jays split locations for the final two non-conference games of the regular-season, traveling to Northern Colorado on Friday, Sept. 21, before returning home to host Oral Roberts on Sunday, Sept. 23.
2011 Missouri Valley Tournament Champion Illinois State marks the first Valley opponent for the Bluejays, traveling to Omaha for a Saturday, Sept. 29, match at Morrison Stadium. The two teams, who have won the MVC Tournament crown the last two seasons, are set for a kickoff at 7:00 pm.
From that point on, the Bluejays alternate home and away MVC games through the remainder of the regular season. Creighton travels to Terre Haute to take on Indiana State on Friday, Oct. 5, and then return home to host Drake on Thursday, Oct. 11.
Creighton's final home game, Senior Day, will be on Saturday, Oct. 20, when the Jays host Evansville. That match is sandwiched by trips to Missouri State (Oct. 14) and the regular-season finale at Northern Iowa (Oct. 25).
Creighton has again bid to host the Missouri Valley Tournament, with the quarterfinals set for Sunday, Oct. 28, at campus sites and the championships on Friday and Sunday, Nov. 2-4. The final decision on host sights will be made in the next few weeks.
