ST. LOUIS, Mo. - For the second straight season, Alicia Montgomery has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference women's soccer scholar-athlete team, as announced by the conference office on Friday. She is one of six members to repeat on the first team, as well as one of six that were also named to the CoSIDA Capital One all-district academic teams.
Montgomery started in 13 of the 14 matches she played in this season, holding opponents to just 14 goals and a 1.16 goals against average. She posted seven shutouts this season, tying her for fifth on the Creighton all-time charts. She also finished the season earning MVC second team honors, as she finished atop the league in shutouts and second in goals against average.
For her career, Montgomery will go down as one of the best goalkeepers in program history. She finished with a 0.84 goals against average, a number that sits atop all Creighton career charts. In 2009, Montgomery posted a 0.58 goals against average, which led the MVC and ranked 15th in the nation. She has a combined 22 career shutouts and now sits in third place on the program charts.
Montgomery earned the first ever Missouri Valley Conference Elite 18 Award (honoring academic and athletic success) last season. She was also named a first team MVC Scholar-Athlete, CoSIDA first-team Academic All-District in 2010 and 2011. Montgomery was named Prairie Farms/MVC Scholar Athlete of the Week once this season, as she holds a 3.79 cumulative grade point average in math and secondary education at Creighton.
A total of 44 student-athletes were nominated for the Valley’s
scholar-athlete team. The criteria for the honor parallels the CoSIDA
standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or
important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative
gpa (on a 4.00 scale). Also, students must have participated in at
least 75 percent of the regular-season matches or the State Farm MVC
Championship. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and
academic standing at their institution (true freshmen
and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at
least one full academic year at their institution. Sports Information
Directors at MVC institutions voted for the team.
