NORMAL, Ill. - Six different players scored as Illinois State set a school-record for goals in a single match in an 8-1 win over Creighton on Thursday afternoon.
The win gives ISU a bye into the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, and moves the defending champion Bluejays into a quarterfinal round match to be played on Sunday afternoon.
Illinois State scored first in the ninth minute, then tacked on four more goals in the next six minutes to take a commanding 5-0 lead. The Redbirds also scored just over four minutes before half, then tallied two more in the first six minutes of the second half to make it 8-0. Illinois State has led the MVC in goals all season, now sitting at 45, and was coming off a 3-1 win over No. 10 Wisconsin-Milwaukee last Sunday.
The Jays lone goal of the afternoon came with just three minutes left in the match, when senior Tessa McKeone notched her first career goal. The Omaha native scored off a deflection at 87:54.
"I'm normally not speechless but it's difficult to put into words the first 20 minutes of the match," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "I have to give credit to Illinois State, they came out ready to play and took it to us. The majority of it was our own undoing - conceding eight goals and two own goals is disappointing but not responding after a couple early goals is what I'm most disappointed about. We actually generated enough chances to score four or five goals, but it was clearly a day where everything that could go wrong, did."
Creighton will learn its quarterfinal round foe later tonight when the MVC releases the tournament bracket, but the Jays are guaranteed the third seed and will host its next match on Sunday, October 30 at 1:00 pm at Morrison Stadium.
ISU outshot Creighton 21-17 for the match, with Andrea Zuniga leading the way for the Jays with seven shots on the day.
