Tom Mendoza
Associate Head Coach
Tom Mendoza begins his sixth year at Creighton, and third as the program’s associate head coach.

Mendoza serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator and aids with practice, scouting as well as other facets of the program. His efforts helped Creighton attract the nation’s 11th-ranked recruiting class in 2014-15 according to PrepVolleyball.com.

He also works directly with Creighton’s setters and middle blockers. Last year, middle blocker Kelli Browning earned her third consecutive All-America honor when she was selected a Third Team pick by the AVCA. Browning finished as the program’s all-time leader in block assists and hitting percentage, while also being a three-time all-league choice.

In 2013, Browning and setter Michelle Sicner were named AVCA Honorable-Mention All-Americans as Creighton led the nation with 3.06 blocks per set.

In 2012, Browning was named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Meanwhile setter Megan Bober was MVC Player of the Year as the Bluejays swept MVC regular-season and tournament titles while landing in the top 25 for the first time. Both women were named AVCA All-American Honorable Mention.

Mendoza’s groups in 2011 featured First Team All-MVC picks Laurel Sanford and Bober, as well as All-Freshman honoree Sicner. He helped with the mid-season implementation of a 6-2 offense that gave opponents fits throughout the year.

In his first season, Creighton went 21-12 and advanced to its first NCAA Tournament, where the Bluejays defeated nationally-ranked Iowa State.

He was hired at Creighton in June 2010 after spending the 2009 season at the University of Evansville. While with the Purple Aces, Mendoza worked with the setters, outside hitters and primary passers. He also recruited for the Purple Aces program.

A native of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Mendoza arrived at Evansville after spending two seasons as the volunteer assistant at Michigan State. While at Michigan State, Mendoza and the Spartans appeared in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2007. He also served on the Michigan State volleyball summer camp staff in 2007 and 2008 and directed Spartan Session volleyball camps and clinics.

A three-year letterwinner in volleyball at Newman University and a one-year letterwinner at Lewis University, Mendoza had an outstanding playing career. He was a 10-time Mid-America Men’s Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference Setter of the Week and was a three-time all-conference selection. During his playing career, he was also named an NAIA All-American.

Mendoza received his bachelor’s degree in management information systems from Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill.
