BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Creighton women's basketball team saw its 2013-14 season come to a close as the Bluejays fell to South Dakota State, 62-51, in the second round of the WNIT Tournament on Sunday, March 23.
Creighton's closed the 2013-14 season with a 20-14 record, while South Dakota State moved to 24-9. The Jackrabbits advance to WNIT third round to face the winner of the SMU at Minnesota game that will be played this evening.
The Bluejays got off to a fast start behind seniors Sarah Nelson and McKenzie Fujan, taking an 8-2 lead in the first three minutes. The first bucket of the game came from Fujan on a running jumper, Nelson take the baton to notch Creighton's next six points.
Leading 10-8 near the 12-minute mark (12:26), Creighton exploded out to a 20-8 edge with 10 straight. Freshman Brianna Rollerson led the run with four points, while Nelson and freshman Marissa Janning each knocked down a three-pointer.
Creighton held its 12-point edge to the 7:07 mark but with a 25-13 lead, South Dakota State closed the half with 16 consecutive points to take a 29-25 lead into halftime.
The Jackrabbit run extended into the first five minutes of half number two, before junior Alexis Akin-Otiko delivered a layup to end South Dakota State's 28-0 run.
Down by as much as 19, 50-31 with 8:00 remaining, the Bluejays made a late charge to get within single digits but were unable to overcome the deficit.
Nelson led the Bluejays with 15 points, while Janning finished with 11 points.
South Dakota State had three players finish in double figures, led by a game-high 19 points from Steph Paluch.
