Bluejays Downed by Butler, 67-59

OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's basketball team fell to Butler, 67-59, on Tuesday, March 4 in the Bluejays' regular season finale. Following the game, Creighton honored its graduating senior class: Mckenzie Fujan, Jordan Garrison, Alyssa Kamphaus, Sarah Nelson, Riley Norman and Carli Tritz.

The loss dropped Creighton to 18-12 on the season and 12-6 at the conclusion of BIG EAST play. Butler, meanwhile, moved to 15-14 overall and 10-8 in conference action.

Creighton opened Tuesday's contest with six of the first eight points to build a 6-2 edge (17:37).  Butler however used a 15-0 run over the next eight minutes to claim a 17-6 lead (9:30). Butler went on to lead by as much as 12 points (26-14 with 3:49 remaining) in the first half, but Creighton closed the period on an 11-4 run to go into halftime down just five at 30-25.

Butler opened the second half with five straight to push its lead back to double-digits, 35-25 in the opening minute.  This time it was the Bluejays turn to go on an extended run as Creighton scored the ensuing 11 points to claim a 36-35 lead (15:35).  Four different Bluejays scored during the run, led by six points from sophomore Marissa Janning.

The Bulldogs responded with four straight to take back the lead.  Although the game remained closed the rest of the way, Butler held Creighton off each time the Bluejays made a run to sweep the regular season series.

As the game moved into the final minute, Creighton seniors Carli Tritz and Riley Norman entered the game.  Both Norman and Tritz had ended their playing careers prior to the season due to knee injuries.

Janning finished with a game-high 20 points, while Brianna Rollerson finished with her second career double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds). Fujan closed out the Bluejays in double figures with 11 points.

Despite the loss the Bluejays clinched the #3 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament earlier in the evening when Villanova defeated Marquette.  Creighton finished in a tie for third overall with Villanova, but held the tiebreaker over the Wildcats and thus earned the three seed.

Creighton will get another crack at Butler in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Sunday, March 9 at 2:30 pm as the Bulldogs are the #6 seed.
