OMAHA, Neb. - Led by a season-high 16 points from senior McKenzie Fujan, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Houston, 65-55, on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 4-2 on the season, while Houston fell to 1-4.
Creighton opened the game with a three-ball from the corner by senior Jordan Garrison and did not relinquish the advantage the rest of the way. Contributions from seven differing helped the Bluejays bolt out to a 16-6 lead in the opening eight minutes.
Throughout the remainder of the first period the Bluejays kept Houston at a distance, taking a 29-19 edge in at half.
Fujan dropped in the first five points of the second half as Creighton scored 12 of the first 13 points in the period to push its lead to 41-20 (14:27). By the 12-minute mark, the Bluejays had pushed its lead to a game-high 23 points (47-24) on an interior jumper from freshman Brianna Rollerson.
Creighton maintained its 20-point edge into the final three minutes (58-38), but Houston closed the game on a 17-7 run to make it a 65-55 final.
Fujan led all scorers with 16 points, while Rollerson finished with a career-high 10 points.
Houston got 12 points from Jessieka Palmer and 10 from Destini Texada.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 as the Bluejays host South Dakota at 7 p.m. in D.J. Sokol Arena.
