LAWRENCE, Kan. - Despite a combined 39 points from senior Sarah Nelson and sophomore Marissa Janning, the Creighton women's basketball fell to Kansas 74-66 on Sunday, Nov. 17.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-2 on the season, while Kansas moved to 3-0 overall.
Creighton got off to a quick start in the opening five minutes as the Bluejays built a 10-5 edge with 15:15 remaining. Kansas committed turnovers on its opening two possessions, while Janning scored six of the Bluejays opening ten points on drives to the bucket.
Kansas, however, was able to reverse the fortunes of the two teams as the Jayhawks scored 13 of the next 15 points to claim an 18-12 edge (11:27). Chelsea Gardner keyed the Kansas surge with six of her game-high 24 points.
Down 32-20 with just over five minutes left in the first half (5:18), it was the Bluejays turn to make a run. Janning got her teammates rolling with five quick points via a driving layup and a three-pointer from the left wing. After a Kansas basket, senior McKenzie Fujan drained another three-ball to make it 34-26 with 2:17 remaining in the half.
After two Jayhawk free throws, Creighton got a traditional three-point play from senior Jordan Garrison and a driving layup by Janning to send the game to halftime at 36-33.
As they have in each of the previous three games, the Bluejays struggled out of the gate in half number two. Creighton was one of its first eight (1-of-8) as Kansas jumped out to a 52-35 lead with 14:43 showing on the clock.
Creighton refused to roll over, clawing back into the game bit by bit. Down 16 at 63-47, the Bluejays got three-balls from freshman Lauren Works and Nelson to make it 63-53 (6:51). After each team hit one of two from the line, Nelson converted a layup and Janning knocked down two free throws to bring Creighton within six at 64-58 with 4:03 remaining.
Unfortunately that was as close as the Bluejays would get, before falling 74-66.
Janning’s 22 points led Creighton, while Nelson finished with 17 points. Kansas got 24 from Gardner, 19 points from Asia Boyd and 14 from Lamaria Cole.
The Bluejays have a bit of time off before returning to action on Saturday, Nov. 23 as Creighton will host Houston at 6:05 pm
