WBB Assistant Steve Huber Accepts Head Coaching Position at Drury

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Creighton women's basketball assistant coach Steve Huber accepted the head coach position for the division II Drury Lady Panthers basketball program on Tuesday, April 23.

Huber, 52, has spent the past seven seasons as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for the Jays. Huber was a core foundation in Creighton's back-to-back NCAA appearances in 2011-12 and 2012-13.  This season the Bluejays finished 25-8, earning the first at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament since 1994.  Creighton upset Syracuse in the opening round, before falling to second-seeded Tennessee in Knoxville. The Bluejays were 140-88 and qualified for post-season play six times in Huber's seven seasons on the Creighton bench.

Before coming to Creighton, Huber was an assistant at division II Central Missouri (2004-06), Louisville (2002-03), and at San Diego State (1999-2002).  Huber also served as the head coach at Benedictine College from 1994-99, guiding the Ravens to three NAIA national tournament appearances, two conference titles and a 108-55 record.

"I'm leaving a great situation. I've had seven great years at Creighton, coach Flanery is one of my best friends and we've been extremely successful together. However the opportunity to be a head coach again was to enticing to pass on," said Huber.  "I appreciate the opportunity I was given seven years ago by coach Flanery and Bruce Rasmussen.  I leave here more prepared to be a head coach that when I arrived."

"Steve's experience can't be overvalued. His recruiting contacts and experience are indispensable. He is passionate and incredibly connected when it comes to recruiting," noted Creighton head coach Jim Flanery.  "He has a great rapport with the players, does a good job of teaching the fundamentals and the players buy in to his way of communicating. We will definitely miss him, but we wish him the best."

Huber becomes just the third head coach in the 14-year history of the Lady Panthers program, following Nyla Milleson (2000-07) and Steve Harold (2007-13). Drury has a 314-88 record (a .781 winning percentage) in its 13 seasons, and has never had a losing season.
