ST. LOUIS, Mo. - After securing their first MVC regular-season title since 2002-03, the Creighton women's basketball team enter the 2012-13 MVC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. Creighton and Wichita State both finished with identical 15-3 league records, but the Shockers earned the top seed following the league's tiebreaking procedures.
Creighton enters the MVC Tournament looking to claim back-to-back championships as the Jays earned their second MVC Tournament Championship last season. The Bluejays first tournament title came in 2002 (2001-02 season), last season (2011-12) was the Bluejays first tournament title under head coach Jim Flanery.
This year's tournament - the sixth neutral-site event in the conference's history - begins on Thursday, March 14, at The Family Arena in St. Charles. Mo. The top seed has won the conference tournament in 15 of 27 seasons and a team that has won or shared the regular-season title has gone on to win the tournament title 17 times. Top seeds have four runner-up finishes. Teams seeded No. 2 have won the tournament four times and finished as the runner-up 11 times.
The tournament, which features nine games over four days, culminates on Sunday, March 17, with a nationally televised game on FS Midwest as part of the MVC Television Network at 2:00 p.m. CST. Both semifinals will also air on the MVC Television Network at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. CST on Saturday, March 16.
The opening round games on Thursday evening, as well as the four quarterfinal games on Friday will be shown live online, free of charge, as part of the Valley's video-streaming package on the league's website. Log on to www.mvc-sports.com for more details.
Missouri State has won the most MVC Tournament titles, nine, of any Valley school, its last coming in 2006. Drake has claimed five tournament titles. Illinois State won the league's first tournament title in 1983.
