Women's Basketball Trio Named to All-Jesuit Teams
OMAHA, Neb. -- Three members of the Creighton women's basketball team have been honored for their work during the recently-completed 2011-12 season by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight.
Sophomore guard Carli Tritz was one of 10 women nationwide named to the National All-Jesuit Women's Basketball Team, while junior guard Ally Jensen was named to the National Academic All-Jesuit Women's Basketball Team. Sophomore teammate Sarah Nelson was an honorable-mention seleciton to both teams as well.
Joining Tritz on the All-Jesuit team were Shareta Brown (Detroit), Jasmine Brewer (Loyola New Orleans), Keiva Council (Loyola New Orleans), Alex Cowling (Loyola Marymount), Katelan Redmon (Gonzaga), Sugar Rodgers (Georgetown), Katie Sheahin (Brookeville, MD), Kacie Sowell (Seattle) and Kayla Standish (Gonzaga).
Tritz was a first-team all-MVC selection and went on to be named Most Valuable Player of the State Farm MVC Tournament, which was won by Creighton. She had a career-high 29 points in a semifinal win over top-seeded Missouri State, then scored a game-high 19 points in a championship game victory vs. Drake. For the season, she led CU with team-best averages of 14.4 points, 3.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She was also second on the squad in rebounds per game (4.8) and blocked shots per game (0.5).
Nelson followed up a strong freshman season with an even better sophomore campaign. She led CU with 7.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game, while also ranking second with 12.4 points per contest. In the classroom, Nelson owns a 3.65 GPA in Business and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team.
Jensen owns a 3.63 GPA in Nursing, and like Nelson, was also named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team. She led the team with 69 three-pointers and averaged 8.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while helping the Bluejays to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002. During CU's two-point loss to St. John's, she led the Bluejays with 15 points.
Jensen and Nelson are the seventh and eighth Bluejay in the past three years to be honored with this accolade, more than any other school. Creighton's seven first-team honorees since 2009-10 are nearly as many as the other 27 Jesuit schools combined (10).
The All-Jesuit Teams represent student-athletes from the 28 Jesuit colleges spread across the United States that play basketball on all three levels of the NCAA and also in the NAIA. They share the mission of Jesuit education, founded nearly 500 years ago under the principles of St. Ignatius Loyola to educate young people to become men and women dedicated to service and compassionate leadership. Students at Jesuit colleges have long excelled in the classroom and in the community, but they also have played a major role in collegiate basketball in the last 100 years.
