ST. LOUIS – Sophomores Carli Tritz and Sarah Nelson of the Creighton women's basketball team have been named to the all-Missouri Valley Conference teams as voted on by the league media, sports information directors and head coaches and announced by the league office on Wednesday. Tritz earned first-team honors and Nelson was named to the honorable mention team.
Tritz, the reigning MVC Freshman of the Year, was an honorable mention selection to the all-conference team last year and is Creighton's first sophomore to earn first-team all-MVC honors since Christy Neneman in 2002. The Sioux City, Iowa, native leads the team in scoring (13.9), assists (104), steals (54) and free throw percentage (.753). She's the highest scoring sophomore in the league and is tied with Nelson for the team-lead with 21 double-figure scoring games. Tritz ranks fourth in the MVC in assists and assist-turnover ratio, sixth in scoring and steals, 11th in free throw percentage and 12th in field goal percentage.
Nelson leads the Bluejays in rebounds (7.7 pg), field goal percentage (.509), blocks (32), free throws (86), free throw attempts (116) and double-doubles (10). Her 10 double-doubles are the most by a Bluejay since the 1987-88 season. The Omaha Westside product ranks third in the MVC in field goal percentage and double-doubles, sixth in blocked shots and rebounds, 12th in free throw percentage and 13th in both assists and points per game. The forward, who was a member of the MVC All-Freshman Team last year, was twice named MVC Player of the Week in the first three weeks of the season this year.
The Bluejays(17-12) are looking to win their first MVC Tournament title since the 2002 team – led by sophomores Neneman and Dayna Finch. Fourth-seeded Creighton opens play at the 2012 State Farm MVC Tournament in St. Charles, Mo., on Friday at 2:35 pm against No. 5 seed UNI (16-13).
