LOUIS - Sophomore Sarah Nelson of the Creighton women's basketball team has been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First-Team as voted on by the league's sports information directors and announced by the league office Tuesday. Junior Ally Jensen earned honorable-mention scholar-athlete recognition as well.
Nelson owns a 3.65 cumulative grade point average through her first three semesters at Creighton. The sophomore forward is averaging 12.8 points and team-leading 7.7 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in field goal percentage (.509), blocks (32), free throws (86), free-throw attempts (116) and double-doubles (10). The Omaha Westside product ranks third in the MVC in field goal percentage, third in double-doubles, sixth in blocked shots, sixth in rebounds, 12th in free-throw percentage and 13th in both assists and points per game.
Jensen, who carries a 3.63 GPA in nursing, leads the Bluejays and ranks fifth in the MVC with 61 three-pointers. The Ames, Iowa, product ranks 10th in school history with 140 career three-pointers. The junior guard ranks third on the team with 8.6 points per game this year. She's shooting a career-best 37.9 percent from three-point range this year, to rank 32nd in the NCAA in three-point percentage.
The fourth-seeded Bluejays (17-12) are preparing for their MVC Tournament quarterfinal game on Friday at 2:35 pm against fifth-seeded Northern Iowa (16-13).
