ST. LOUIS –Sam Schuett and Kelsey Woodard have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First-Team, while Kellie Nelson has been named to the second team, it was announced by the league office Tuesday. All three seniors were earlier named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District VII teams and they are each repeat Valley Scholar-Athletes.
Schuett, who graduate magna cum laude with an accounting degree last year, earned a 4.0 grade point average in her first semester of graduate school in the fall. The fifth-year senior forward was also a first-team scholar-athlete last year and was an honorable-mention selection as a sophomore. Schuett is averaging 10.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while her five double-doubles on the season lead the team. The Millard West product is one of just two players in school history with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 100 blocked shots in a career.
Woodard has earned her third consecutive scholar-athlete recognition, following an honorable-mention nod last year and a second-team honor as a sophomore. The senior is averaging a career-high 13.2 points per game to lead the Bluejays this season, while her 63 three-pointers also lead the team and rank third in the MVC. The guard out of Bellevue West carries a 3.82 cumulative GPA in finance and her 1,463 career points rank ninth in school history.
Nelson, who carries a 3.88 cumulative GPA in mathematics, is a repeat performer on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Second-Team. The senior center is averaging 7.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this season. The Omaha Westside product ranks eighth in school history with 88 career blocked shots and 10th in school history, shooting 48.9 percent from the field in her career.
Creighton (18-11, 12-6 MVC) begins play at the State Farm MVC Tournament in St. Charles, Mo., against Wichita State (16-13, 10-8 MVC) on Friday at 2:30 pm.
