ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Four Creighton women’s basketball players have been named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Teams as announced by the league office Tuesday. Sam Schuett earned first-team honors, while Kellie Nelson and Megan Neuvirth were tabbed to the second-team and Kelsey Woodard brought in honorable-mention notice.
Schuett, who was also named to CoSIDA’s ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII First-Team, owns a 3.77 cumulative grade point average in accounting. The redshirt junior leads the Bluejays in three-pointers (54), three-point field-goal percentage (.419), free-throw percentage (.851), rebounds (7.5), blocks (36) and double-doubles (6). The forward out of Omaha Millard West is averaging 12.7 points per game this year, including a team-best 14 in MVC play.
Nelson joined Schuett on the Academic All-District VII First-Team and carries a 3.88 GPA in mathematics. The junior center leads the team, shooting 48.4 percent from the field, which ranks 10th in the MVC. On the season, the Omaha Westside product is averaging career-highs with 9.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, ranking second on the team with 28 blocked shots.
Neuvirth was a second-team Academic All-District honoree with a 3.36 GPA in marketing and human resource management. The forward from West Point, Neb. (Central Catholic), is Creighton’s active leader in scoring (1,205), rebounds (899), assists (263) and steals (275) and the Valley’s active leader in rebounds and steals. She is the only player in school history with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 200 steals.
Woodard was also recognized on the Academic All-District Second-Team with her 3.79 GPA in finance. On the season, the Bellevue West graduate is averaging 9.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. Earlier this season, the junior guard became the 21st player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. Her career free-throw percentage (.842) ranks second in school history, while her 186 three-pointers rank fifth in CU history.
Creighton (18-9, 13-5 MVC), the No. 2 seed in the upcoming State Farm MVC Tournament, opens play at the event on Friday at 6 p.m., in a quarterfinal game with the winner of Drake and Evansville’s first round contest.
