Wow. There is no better time to be a Jay than right now! Every time a student, professor, family member, friend, news reporter, or fan says "Congratulations" I get the biggest smile on my face! Things haven’t really hit me yet that we are the Missouri Valley Conference champions. We were the team that hoisted the prestigious trophy and raised the infamous Missouri Valley Champion signs. That was us that cut down the nets while the cameras were flashing and the reporters were filming. That day belonged to our team. Yep, the same team that started this conference season 0-3, and yet there we were singing (in perfect harmony, of course) "We Are The Champions" on Sunday afternoon.
Just take a second and let that soak in Creighton Nation...we are sending both our men and women’s basketball teams to the Big Dance! We are making history right NOW!
I can’t say enough about how much this team has grown. We have taken responsibility about making ourselves better as individuals throughout the season to make our team better. Many people don’t understand how hard that is and how much work it takes, but it requires some pretty special teammates to not care who the leading scorer is or whose name gets in the headlines in tomorrow’s paper. None of us care about those stats and all that jazz…we just want to see that Creighton wins and that we are moving on. And that was our approach this weekend, taking one possession at a time.
With that being said, all of this success did not come easy. This weekend was something none of us will ever forget! When the momentum of the game shifted in the second half of the UNI game and we were on our heels…we didn’t break. We got consecutive defensives stops and sealed the quarterfinal win. When Missouri State busted the game open and we were down by 12 in the first 4 minutes...we didn’t flinch. We came back with a 14-2 run of our own and upset the No.1 team in the tournament. When Drake cut our comfortable 15-point lead down to 2 in crunch time…we didn’t snap. We blew the game back open with consecutive 3-pointers and brought the MVC trophy back to Omaha for the first time in ten years. Boom! That’s who we have been all year. We don’t care who gets the job done, we just want to win. This team is so hungry, STILL!
When a team can come together like this at such a perfect time, it really is a pretty thing to see. We are fortunate enough to have timed this perfectly. Like I said, there is no better time to be a Bluejay than right now. We are the MVC Champions and we are headed to the Big Dance in Norman, Okla. You bet we’re going to be doing the Wop, Jerk, Wobble, Cat-Daddy, and Dougie the whole way there…but we’re not done dancing yet.
