OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton University men's basketball guard Cavel Witter is this week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Witter, a junior from Kansas City, Mo., averaged 20.0 points, 2.5 steals, 2.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game off the bench while leading Creighton in scoring during wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and four-time defending Summit League champ Oral Roberts last week.
Witter shot 68.8 percent from the floor (11-16), including 66.7 percent from three-point range (6-9) while also hitting 80 percent (12-15) at the line.
This is Witter's first career honor as MVC Player of the Week, though he did earn MVC Newcomer of the Week honors twice last season.
Witter opened his week with 15 points and four steals in 20 minutes of a 32-point win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday.
On Saturday, Witter scored 25 points and dished three assists in 28 minutes off the bench of an 87-65 win over Oral Roberts. Witter made 6-of-9 from the field, 4-of-5 from downtown and 9-of-10 at the line during the win.
With Creighton leading 45-41 early in the second half, Witter scored the game's next eight points and he would score 11 points during the team's 14-3 run that pushed the lead into double-digits for good. On the defensive end, he also helped hound ORU's leading scorer Robert Jarvis (18.5 ppg) into 4-of-15 shooting, including 1-of-9 from three-point range.
Creighton (3-0) returns to action on Tuesday night at 7 pm when it plays at Arkansas-Little Rock (3-0). TIp off is set for 7:05 pm from Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, Ark., and the game can be heard on KXSP (Big Sports 590 AM) and seen on KMTV.
