Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which was cut to 13 on Sunday morning. On Wednesday, June 22nd, McDermott learned he made the team.
The men on the team will head to Lithuania on June 24th for a few practices and scrimmages before competing in the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship For Men in late June/early July in Latvia.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his sixth entry, with USA Basketball photos by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
Today was a very exciting day. We had a quick walk through this morning going through plays and worked some on our press offense as well. We had the music going during practice once again, and our communication was much better. My dad was supposed to make it to our second practice today but he missed his flight out of Omaha. He's the one that has us at the airport 2 hours early every time we travel so it is surprising to see him miss a flight!
We ended up scrimmaging Air Force along with a few others again during our second practice. Before the scrimmages, Coach Hewitt had UCONN's Jeremy Lamb give a motivational speech on what it takes to win it all. This was a good way to get us going and got us even more motivated for that gold medal. The other team was pressuring us pretty hard and played a lot of zone as well. It was good to be put in different situations like that. I feel like we got a lot out of those scrimmages and we thank Air Force for doing that.
After practice I got a chance to go out to dinner with my dad as he finally made it to Colorado. We also ran some errands for the big trip to Latvia. We take off on Friday morning to head overseas. It's crazy how fast this week is going by. Two more practices and I am out of the Country. I can hardly wait. I will be adding some photos of the training facility to tomorrow's blog as well so make sure to tune in!
