Doug's Diary, Day Five at Team USA Tryouts
Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which was cut to 13 on Sunday morning before reaching its final roster of 12 sometime on Wednesday.
The 12 men that make the team will head to Lithuania on June 24th for a few practices and scrimmages before competing in the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship For Men in late June/early July in Latvia.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his fifth entry, with USA Basketball photos by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
This morning we had a very interesting practice. Coach Hewitt decided to play some 80's music while we went through our drills. This was a way to get us to communicate louder as a team. At first we didn't really know what to think, but by the end of practice we all agreed it made practice go by much smoother. It definitely tested us on how well we could execute on both ends of the floor.
After a lunch break and a few Entourage episodes watched, it was back to the practice floor. We started off practice covering our transition offense and did a lot with the pick and roll action. The coaches are stressing to us how important this will be when we get overseas. We're going to be tough to guard with the athletes and playmakers that we have on this team. We then spent some time covering our zone offense and defense. We aren't going to play a lot of zone, but you always need to cover the basics. Today went by really quick and I feel like were getting so much better as a team. It makes it much more fun having the thought of a gold medal in the back of your mind going through these practices! Hope all is well back in Omaha and I know my Creighton teammates are working extremely hard as well. That's all I got for now, Go Jays!
