ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Kenny Lawson Jr. has been named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week for the games played between Dec. 17-24, it was announced today. Lawson is the fourth different Bluejay to earn such an honor this season, joining teammates P'Allen Stinnett, Chad Millard and Cavel Witter.
A redshirt freshman from Vista, Calif., Lawson Jr. averaged 12.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 13.3 minutes per game off the bench last week. He connected on 70.6 percent of his shots from the floor as Creighton won three home games by 19 points or more last week.
Lawson led Creighton in scoring on Monday (Dec. 17) with 15 points and eight rebounds in a 37-point win over Houston Baptist. The freshman hit 5-of-6 shots from both the floor and charity stripe while playing just 13 minutes of CU's largest win ever at Qwest Center Omaha.
On Thursday (Dec. 20) against North Carolina Central, Lawson had a team-best 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor while also grabbing four rebounds in 14 minutes of a 33-point win over North Carolina Central.
Those two games made him the first Bluejay freshman since 1999 to lead the team in scoring in consecutive games.
Lawson finished his week with nine points and a career-high three steals in 13 minutes of CU's 80-61 win over UALR on Saturday (Dec. 22).
For the week, Lawson hit 12-of-17 shots from the field (70.6 percent) and 13-of-19 at the line (68.4 percent).
Creighton (9-1) opens Missouri Valley Conference play on Saturday, Dec. 29, with a 7:05 pm home game against Illinois State.
