FLASH QUOTES - DIRECTV WOODEN LEGACY GAME 7: San Diego State 86 Creighton 80
San Diego State Coach Steve Fisher - “I’m glad they didn’t have the mercy rule in the first five minutes of the game, the way they started out on us a lot of people thought it was going to be a route and they looked super. That’s a really good team that we played, and fought and competed and made plays. I thought in the first half our defense allowed us to get back in the game. McDermott had 16 of their first 19 points and then we did a better job of contesting and he maybe got a little bit tired and missed a couple and our defense created some offense, some easy baskets. We had eight offense rebounds at half and only three turnovers, and that wins. We played a very good team that will be an NCAA team. We scrapped and fought and bowed our back, tilted a little bit but we finally did what we had to do and that’s have the horn and go out with a win. I’m proud of our team and we are very excited to be playing on Sunday in the championship game.”
“Well we made some baskets. If you’ve watched us in practice or in some of our earlier games sometimes we’ve had a hard time making open shots. When we make open shots we are very good. Our staple is we are going to make it hard for you get open, clean looks. As much as we said tonight make them take hard two’s, they made 13 three’s on us but I thought we defended, even though we gave up 80 points, I thought we defended efficiently. What I saw in our team, was a team. We do some things that make it hard on people. Sometimes we do things that make it hard on ourselves but this was a nice win for us.”
“I reminded our kids, two years ago in our building we were ahead 17 points ahead and they came back and won. When Creighton came into our town two years ago we were up 17 points in the first half and they came back and won so we knew we had lots and lots of time and this a game of runs. We gave and we got.”
San Diego State Guard Xavier Thames - “It wasn’t any motivation. We treat every game the same. I did have it in the back of mind two years ago we were up 17 and they came back and beat us. There a good team, they’re going to be in the tournament like coach said, I’m just happy we got this win tonight.”
San Diego State Forward Winston Shepard - “The fans were great. It was pretty much a home game for us. I think that fueled us a lot, it makes it a lot easier when you have people in the stands that are on your side and yelling for you. It gives you a little extra energy and juice to fight.”
Creighton Head Coach Greg McDermott Overall Statement
"San Diego State is a heck of a basketball team. They were more physical tonight than we were. To their credit, we kind of came out and threw first punch and we couldn't knock them down. They came storming back mostly on the offensive glass. I'm proud of my team for not quitting. I'm disappointed in what transpired for us to get down 19 points. We had some foolish turnovers. We've been a team through five games that made more free throws than our opponents attempted and tonight our opponent shot 20 more than we did. We're gonna have hard time winning when that happens."
Forward Senior Doug McDermott
On San Diego State's defense
"We just hit some shots, we hit a lot of good looks. I guess they were more physical, they got into us a little more. I think our offense was stagnant at times. We have to do a better job moving at times. They did a great job recovering from our quick start."
With 27 seconds remaining in the game
"We drew up a play that wasn't for a particular guy. I happen to get open and Grant fouled me on a slip up deal and I missed the layup that I usually make. Then Grant fought hard and gave us another look. We just couldn't get the ball in the hole and that happens. It was a great look."
On San Diego State's athleticism
"We haven't seen a team like that this year. They did a great job of driving into the gaps. I thought they were a lot like Tulsa. Little more athletic and taller. We're gonna face a lot of teams like that in the Big East, so it was great to see a team like that. We came up short, but I'm happy with the way we bounced back. We were down 19 points at one point in the second half and we brought back within three. I'm proud of the way we fought back, it was a great learning lesson for us."
