NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Creighton sophomore Doug McDermott received the Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award at a just-concluded banquet in New Orleans, site of this weekend's Final Four.
The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation’s
top Division I player who has played at least two seasons with
his respective team. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not
eligible. The award, now in its third year, was won by Sherron Collins (Kansas) in 2010 and last season by Kemba Walker (Connecticut), and is presented by collegeinsider.com.
McDermott has already been named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press, USBWA, NABC and
ESPN.com, and a Second Team All-America by The Sporting News and
CBSSports.com. He is also one of four finalists for the Naismith Award, which will be awarded on Sunday at a different banquet in New Orleans. He has previously been named the Larry Bird MVC Player of the
Year, the first sophomore in the award's history to be honored.
McDermott finished his season averaging 22.9 points per game, a figure
that ranks third nationally. His 801 points, 307 field goals and 48.6
percent accuracy from three-point range all were school records for a
single-season. Coached by Doug's father, Greg McDermott, Creighton finished 29-6 and advanced to the third-round
of the NCAA Tournament.
The award is named in honor of coaching great Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997. In 2002 Olson was selected for enshrinement into the Naismith
Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
The 30-member voting panel includes Tom Crean (Indiana), Jordan
Hill (Los Angeles Lakers), Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers),
Steve Kerr (CBS/TNT Sports), Josh Pastner (Memphis), Lorenzo Romar (Washington),
Damon Stoudamire (Memphis Grizzlies), Jeff Goodman (CBSSports.com) and Jason Terry (Dallas
