Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which was cut to 13 on Sunday morning. On Wednesday, June 22nd, McDermott learned he made the team.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his 13th entry (and sixth from Europe), with USA Basketball photos by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
Jays fans, it's been a tough last couple of days here in Riga. We started off our Gold medal bracket with a loss against Russia. I'm sure you have already heard, but we just didn't shoot the ball well. They were hitting tough shots and we gave them way too many three-pointers. I give them a lot of credit with the way they defended us and how well prepared they were for us. It was unfortunate to ruin our gold medal hopes right off the bat like that, but we bounced back and beat a Poland squad who beat Russia earlier in the tournament. We could have hung our heads and not put much effort into this game, but we showed the passion we have for this game by coming out on top, 84-47.
Tomorrow we face a really good Australian team. We were both the number one seeds coming into the final bracket, so it should be a challenge for our team. A little bit about the Australians: they have two guys going to Boise State, one going to Butler, one going to New Mexico, and a few other Division I players. They play really well as a team and will really defend. Hopefully after a win tomorrow, we will head back to Lithuania for the night followed by an early flight in the a.m. I have looked at my flight schedule, and lets just say there is a lot of layovers. It is disappointing we fell short of our goal, but there is a lot I have taken from this trip. I will check in one last time and let you know how the Australia game went and my take on the whole experience.
