Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which was cut to 13 on Sunday morning. On Wednesday, June 22nd, McDermott learned he made the team.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his 12th entry (and fifth from Europe), with USA Basketball photos by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
What a great last few days it has been in Riga. I was able to help my dad and brother out with some clothes as they had to wait for their lost luggage. What a rough way to start off their trip. We started out with our first game against Team Canada on the fourth of July and came out victorious. They have a great point guard (Kevin Pangos) who will be a freshman at Gonzaga next year. We did a really good job on not letting him get going from the 3-point line, which was huge. They also had a 7'4 guy on their team which definitely made things interesting. He had good touch and played well against us. I believe he is going to Xavier. We knew our biggest challenge was coming the next day.
Lithuania, led by Jonas Valanciunas, had smacked us by 30 points a week previous to our tournament matchup against them. We knew this would be a great test to see how well we have grown as a team thus far. We got off to an incredible start and were up 20 at one point in the first half. I believe they (Lithuania) finished the half on a 14-1 run. We played well in the third and most of the fourth, but fell apart down the stretch. They forced overtime and led by 6 with 3 minutes remaining in OT. Then it turned into the Patric Young and Jeremy Lamb show. Patric had back to back "and-1" dunks and Jeremy had a turn-around jumper that sealed the deal. Coming back from behind in that atmosphere is not an easy thing to do, but we stayed calm and did something special.
Tomorrow we face a very good Croatia team. I know they have a few NBA prospects on their team, so it will be a challenge for us. It isn't going to get easier for us going forward, but I am pretty sure we have the number one seed locked up. I wanted to wish a happy belated birthday to my lovely mother and hope you all had a great fourth of July weekend!
