Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which was cut to 13 on Sunday morning. On Wednesday, June 22nd, McDermott learned he made the team.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his 11th entry (and fourth from Europe), with USA Basketball photos by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
Jays fans, its been a little bit since my last post so I thought I would let you know how things are going. We just got done playing China and we beat them fairly easily. We got off to a great start but then had a bit of a melt down in the third quarter and made it a much closer game. We knew we had to win this game to win our pool so we turned it up a notch in the fourth quarter and got the victory.
The previous two days we've played Egypt and Serbia. We were clicking on all cylinders against Egypt, but had a very close game with a great Serbia club. We were down late in the fourth quarter but we never panicked. With a drive and layup by Tim Hardaway Jr. and a big defensive stop we were able to pull away with the victory. It has been fun playing against other countries and the one thing I have taken from this experience so far is the physicality of the game overseas. I think it will make me a much better player in the long run playing against these guys.
We are all very excited to move to the next city, Riga. I have been hearing it's the Las Vegas of Latvia. We start off play Monday against Canada. I wonder who Jahenns will cheer for? I hope he can support his roommate, but I understand if he wants to cheer for his homeland. After that we got the rematch vs. Lithuania followed by a Croatia team who beat Lithuania by 15 a few days ago. We understand it's going to be a challenge, but we are prepared. On another note, I had my first American fast food meal tonight. Let's just say I haven't been that excited for fast food in awhile! And if any of you were wondering, there is not a better McDonald's then the one on 24th and Cumming. We travel tomorrow and will get settled in to the new spot. I will make sure to check in at some point while in Riga. Oh and how could I forget, Happy Fourth of July!
