Vanderloo Joins Men's Basketball Staff
Vanderloo has spent the previous 19 seasons as the head coach at Sioux City (Iowa) East High School, where he led the Black Raiders to 295 wins and eight state tournament appearances, and helped develop 36 players that went on to play in college. He is the winningest boys high school basketball coach in Sioux City history.
"I've known Jeff 17 years since I first took the job at Wayne State as a head coach," said McDermott. "We recruited one of his players at Northern Iowa, Ben Jacobson, and obviously Ben had a career for us there. I've always had tremendous respect for his basketball knowledge. He's unbelievably organized and someone I have a great deal of trust in, which is very important in this operations position."
Vanderloo, 48, brings 24 years of coaching experience to the Creighton program. After graduating at Morningside in 1985, he served as an assistant coach at Sioux City East for four seasons (1986-91). After going 16-6 in his lone year as a head coach at Sergeant Bluff-Luton (Iowa), Vanderloo returned to East as head coach.
Vanderloo led East to a 2002 state title, with former Northern Iowa standout guard Ben Jacobson leading the way. This past February, he was named one of eight finalists for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association national basketball coach of the year.
Vanderloo is a 10-time District Coach of the Year and was named IBCA State Coach of the Year in 2002. His teams won seven conference titles and won 15 regional championships. He's also served on the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association board the past dozen years, including a term as president in 1998.
Basketball is in the blood for the Vanderloo family. His father, Rich, is a former East boys basketball coach and athletic director. His brother John was head coach at Sioux City North, and another brother Ras is an assistant at East. In addition, his brother Jim is the principal at Sioux City West.
Vanderloo and his wife, Kori, have been married 11 years. The couple has two daughters, Jordan (10) and Jaci (8).
Crawford, a member of McDermott's staff at both Iowa State and Creighton during the past five years, was announced as an assistant coach at alma mater Northern Iowa on Tuesday.
Creighton went 23-16 in 2010-11 while playing in the postseason for the 14th consecutive season. The Bluejays return five of their top six scorers to the floor in 2011-12.
