Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which was cut to 13 on Sunday morning. On Wednesday, June 22nd, McDermott learned he made the team.
The men on the team will head to Lithuania on June 24th for a few practices and scrimmages before competing in the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship For Men in late June/early July in Latvia.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his seventh entry, with USA Basketball photos by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
Today we had our last two practices before taking off to Europe. Before we started practice this morning we got our jerseys and had our team photo. I got jersey number 11 and they gave us a sheet with all of the players that have worn our number. My list includes: Karl Malone, Dwight Howard, Doc Rivers, Stephen Curry (I know my roommate Jahenns Manigat would be proud), David Robinson and Isiah Thomas.
We had more of a walk through this morning then we got after it this afternoon. It felt good to have one last workout before we take that long flight. After practice I had a little more time to spend with my dad before he went back to Omaha. It was good showing him around while he was here. We also got a chance as a team to watch the NBA Draft at a restaurant. We had a little contest to see who could guess the top 10 picks, and I wasn't even close. Tomorrow we have a long day of traveling starting with a 6 am wake up call. I will check in with you when I'm in Europe!
