Doug's Diary, Day Three; McDermott Reacts To Making Initial Cut
Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which was cut to 13 on Sunday morning before reaching its final roster of 12 sometime on Wednesday.
The 12 men that make the team will head to Lithuania on June 24th for a few practices and scrimmages before competing in the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship For Men in late June/early July in Latvia.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his third entry, with USA Basketball photos by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
What a special day it was here in Colorado. I started off the morning with a 6:45 wake up call and it was not easy waking up. You could tell by the body language that most of the guys were tired and sore arriving the practice facility. We started off by doing 20 minutes of transition drills and then it was right to scrimmages. We played three games and my team won them all, so it was a great way to start the morning.
After the scrimmages came the big news. The committee took us into a conference room where Coach Boeheim talked to us about how well this group of guys competed this weekend. He told us that we are all good enough to be on the team and that it was as hard as it's ever been to cut players. I really didn't know where I stood in the mix before Sean Ford (USA Basketball's men's national team director) read off the finalists for the team. Then my name was called. I can't put into words the special feeling I had that moment. It was tough (and awkward) to say goodbye to the guys that were cut. They are all great players and have very bright futures ahead of them. I'm sure they will all use this as motivation to become better players.
After a very defensive-emphasized evening practice and a much-needed ice bath, I have had some time to reflect on the big news I received today. I am very blessed to be in this position representing Creighton. They make one more cut on Wednesday, so I am going to do everything I can to avoid that. I hope all is well back in Omaha and want to give big thanks to you guys for being best fans there is. I got a lot of love from you on Twitter and greatly appreciate that. Oh, one more thing...Happy Fathers Day Coach Mac and to all the fathers out there!
