Doug McDermott Earns Third BIG EAST Weekly Honor

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton senior Doug McDermott has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week after averaging 27.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of lopsided victories last week.

McDermott opened his week with 21 points in just 22 minutes in a 79-61 road win at Long Beach State. McDermott had 19 points in the game’s first 25 minutes to help Creighton build a 62-34 lead, and he would play just three of the final 12 minutes in the one-sided victory to wrap up an eight-day road trip in California.

He returned home with 33 points and eight rebounds in Sunday’s 82-67 win over in-state rival Nebraska, the 18th game of 30 or more points in his storied career. McDermott had 11 points in the first five minutes as Creighton raced to an 18-2 lead and never trailed against the Big Ten foe. McDermott had 17 points in the first 15 minutes as the lead was extended to 42-12, before closing the night with 33 points overall.

McDermott finished the week making 17-of-34 attempts from the field (50 percent), including 7-of-13 shots from three-point range (53.8 percent), and was also perfect in 13 free throw attempts (100 percent).

He also became the fifth man in school history to surpass 900 career rebounds, while also becoming the fifth man with 200 or more three-pointers.

This is McDermott's 16th career Conference Player of the Week honor, and third in four weeks from the BIG EAST to start his senior campaign. His first 13 honors coming from the MVC office. He also earned MVC Newcomer of the Week accolades seven times as a freshman in 2010-11, meaning he's now earned a Player or Newcomer of the Week award in 23 of 53 weeks as a collegian.

Creighton returns to action on Dec. 17 with a game vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
