#25 Volleyball Sweeps Indiana State

OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 25 Creighton volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep of Indiana State (25-15, 25-11 and 25-14) on Friday, Nov. 9.

The win lifted the Jays to 23-3 on the season and 14-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC).  Indiana State, meanwhile, fell to 3-22 overall and 1-14 in MVC play.

The Jays took control of the first set right away with a 5-0 run behind the serving of sophomore Katie Neisler to force an Indiana State timeout.  Freshman Melanie Jereb opened the run for Creighton with two consecutive kills, then back-to-back Sycamore errors pushed it to 4-0.  The Jays' run was capped by a kill from senior Heather Thorson.   The separation stayed at four points to 12-8, when Creighton used another four point burst with Neisler at the service line.  Once again Thorson and Jereb delivered kills and Indiana State committed two errors, pushing Creighton's lead to 16-8.  The Jays went on for the 25-15 victory in the opening set, holding Indiana State to a .000 hitting percentage.

The Jays repeated the winning formula in set number two as Creighton opening with an 8-0 run.  Thorson pounded down a kill from the outside to open the set, sending freshman Kate Elman to the service line.  Elman responded with seven consecutive tough serves, including an ace that drew an Indiana State timeout at 7-0.  Creighton went on to push its lead to 12-2, then cruised to the 25-11 win.  Offensively the Jays posted a match high .433 hitting percentage in the second set with 13 kills and no errors on 30 swings.  Indiana State, meanwhile, hit -.057 committing nine errors and just seven kills on 35 attempts.

Set three followed the trend set in the opening sets as the Jays bounced out to a 4-0 lead behind Neisler at the service line.  Creighton went on to earn a 6-1 run on two kills from Thorson, one each from Jereb and sophomore Michelle Sicner and by forcing Indiana State into two attack errors.  Leading 13-10 midway through the set, Creighton put the match away with another 6-1 run.  Sophomore Kelli Browning provided the driving force this time with two of her 10 kills in the match.

Jereb finished with a match-high 11 kills, while Browning had 10 kills.  Senior Megan Bober finished with a double-double, delivering 27 assists and 11 digs.

Indiana State's Cassandra Willis led the Sycamores with eight kills, while Loni Makinson had 12 assists and 13 digs.

The victory Saturday night set a school-record for home wins in a season (11), and also extended Creighton's current records for consecutive victories (11); consecutive home wins (10) and victories in a season (23).

Creighton returns to the court on Saturday, Nov. 10 as the Bluejays host Illinois State at 7 p.m. in senior night for Bober, Brooke Boggs, Natalie Hackbarth, Brittany Moon and Thorson.
