ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Heath Melugin of Missouri State University and Heather Thorson of Creighton University have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the 2011-12 academic year, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Melugin and Thorson was honored for their performance during the period of October 31-November 6.

Now in its 13th year of existence, The Valley’s Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies.  On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.

A midfielder for the Missouri State men’s soccer team, Melugin, a senior from Springfield, Missouri, knocked in the game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in a 2-1 double-overtime road win at Drake on Saturday, November 5.

The MVC Offensive Player of the Week, Melugin, who has a 3.97 cumulative grade-point average in biology, collected his eighth career game-winner, moved into the Missouri State top five all-time in that statistic and helped the Bears clinch a share of the MVC regular-season title.

A middle blocker for the Creighton volleyball team, Thorson, a junior from Mead, Nebraska, averaged 2.67 kills and 1.0 blocks per set while hitting .386, as the Bluejays defeated Wichita State (3-2 on November 4) but lost to Missouri State (3-1 on November 5).

Thorson, who has a 3.438 cumulative grade-point average in exercise science, led Creighton with 14 kills and a .406 hitting percentage in the victory over Wichita State. Versus Missouri State, she had 10 kills, seven blocks and a .360 hitting percentage.

To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
