Volleyball Wins AVCA Team Academic Award
OMAHA, Neb. -- The 2012-13 Creighton University volleyball team has been honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as a recipient of the AVCA Team Academic Award. This is Creighton's ninth award in the last 10 seasons and 11th overall, as the Bluejays previously were honored in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Creighton was one of two Division I teams (women's or men's) from the state of Nebraska to be honored.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA. A record 130 Division I schools qualified for the honor in 2012-13, including seven teams in the BIG EAST Conference.
Last year were named first-team choices on the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team, giving CU 20 such selections in the past 10 seasons. Bober and Boggs both earned CoSIDA Academic All-District VII honors last fall, with Bober becoming the second CoSIDA Academic All-American in program history. The Bluejay volleyball team had a GPA of 3.45 last fall, 3.43 this spring and now owns a 3.35 cumulative GPA.
Creighton returns nine letterwinners and four of six starters from last season's team that went 29-4 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament after sweeping Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles. Top returnees include all-conference selections Melanie Jereb, Leah McNary and Kelli Browning.
The Bluejays will report to campus on August 8th and open the regular-season on Aug. 30 with a match against BYU at the Hampton Inn Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio.
