Torres Named National Assistant Coach of the Year
Release: 01/30/2013

OMAHA, Neb. (Jan. 30) - Creighton men's soccer assistant coach Johnny Torres recently claimed the National Assistant Coach of the Year honor from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) earlier this month at the organization's awards banquet.

Torres received the Glenn "Mooch" Myernick Assistant Men's Coach of the Year award from the NSCAA after he helped guide the Bluejays to a 17-4-3 record and their second consecutive appearance in a College Cup. Earlier this winter he earned Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors from NSCAA for a second consecutive season.

Creighton won the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) regular-season and tournament titles for a second straight season. Along the way the Bluejays tied the MVC team record for the fewest goals allowed (one) in a Valley season set by CU in 2011.

In 2012, the Bluejays advanced to the College Cup in consecutive seasons for the first time in program history and recorded their fifth College Cup appearance all-time (1996, 2000, 2002, 2011 and 2012). CU entered the 2012 College Cup on a 14-match unbeaten streak before falling 1-0 to eventual national champion Indiana in a national semifinal.

Creighton finished the season ranked among the top 20 in four NCAA statistical categories including team goals against average (0.8 - No. 18), shutout percentage (0.46 - No. 18), total goals (39 - No. 19) and save percentage (0.831 - No. 20).  Current MAC Hermann Trophy finalist Jose Gomez and Andrew Ribeiro, were named NSCAA All-America selections and CU placed six student-athletes on MVC All-Conference teams.

Torres, an MVC and Creighton Hall of Famer, just completed his sixth season on the Creighton bench, during which time the Bluejays have gone 86-20-18, won five regular-season MVC titles, advanced to five NCAA tournaments and appeared in two College Cups.
