OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton men’s soccer head coach Elmar Bolowich announced the Bluejays’ 2014 schedule Friday that features five regular-season contests against 2013 NCAA Tournament teams, including four from the Jays’ nine-match BIG EAST conference slate.
The Jays’ will host 12 opponents and travel to play six other squads in the 2014 regular season. The slate is highlighted by nine matches against teams that finished among the top 50 in the final 2013 NCAA RPI; six of those are home contests.
Starting in mid-October, Creighton will face the other four BIG EAST squads that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year in a span of just under a month to close out the regular season. The Bluejays battle three opponents that advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2013 including No. 6 seed Georgetown, No. 9 seed Marquette and Stanford.
In mid-August CU faces two additional 2013 NCAA Tournament teams in exhibition matches. Creighton travels north to face Milwaukee (Aug. 17) and then hosts Wisconsin (Aug. 22) at Morrison Stadium one week after the annual Blue-White Scrimmage opens the action (Aug. 15).
Creighton begins the regular season against Stanford at home Aug. 29. The Cardinal ended last season in the Sweet 16. Another west coast squad invades Omaha two days later in Santa Clara.
Two more home matches dot the Jays’ schedule before they leave Omaha for the first time. Western Illinois visits Morrison Stadium for Socctoberfest (Sept. 5) before Creighton welcomes Cincinnati on Sept. 7.
The Bluejays’ first road contest is at Tulsa (Sept. 13). The Jays blanked the Golden Hurricane to open last season and the teams tied in Tulsa to end the 2014 spring schedule.
Creighton returns home on Sept. 16 to entertain UIC. Later that week the Jays host Saint Louis for their annual Homecoming match (Sept. 20).
The following weekend Creighton plays its first BIG EAST Conference match of 2014 when it travels to Villanova (Sept. 27). Days later CU battles UMKC in a midweek contest at Morrison Stadium (Sept. 30).
The Bluejays’ first BIG EAST home match is against Seton Hall (Oct. 4) to open October. Creighton challenges former Missouri Valley Conference rival Drake on the road a few days later Oct. 7 in its final non-conference match.
Creighton hosts Butler in a BIG EAST contest on Oct. 11 before it travels to St. John’s for a midweek conference battle on Oct. 15. The Red Storm advanced to the second round of the NCAA bracket last fall.
CU treks to Xavier for a league matchup on Oct. 18 in Cincinnati. Despite a No. 46 RPI ranking at the end of last season, the Musketeers were not selected for the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
The Jays return home for two compelling BIG EAST matches to close out October. On Oct. 25 Creighton welcomes last year’s regular-season conference co-champion in Georgetown. Four days later Marquette, winner of the 2013 BIG EAST Championship, visits Omaha for a midweek match. The Hoyas and Golden Eagles ranked among the top 11 in the final 2013 RPI after advancing to the third round of the NCAA tourney.
The Bluejays finish their road slate at conference foe DePaul (Nov. 1).
Creighton will celebrate the contributions of its seniors in the final home match of the season against BIG EAST rival and fellow 2013 NCAA squad Providence on Nov. 7.
Postseason play would occur in November. Creighton has appeared in 21 of the last 22 NCAA Tournaments, including College Cup appearances in 1996, 2000, 2002, 2011 and 2012.
Creighton finished last season with a 9-9-2 overall mark. CU played a lot of tight matches as each of the Jays’ nine losses came by a single goal. The Bluejays completed their first season in the BIG EAST Conference with a 4-4-1 mark and a fifth-place finish. CU finished with a 7-2-1 record at home inside Morrison Stadium. The Jays posted the sixth-best attendance mark nationally with over 27,000 fans attending home contests.
Creighton opens its 2014 campaign Aug. 15 with the Blue-White Scrimmage slated for 6 p.m. CT followed by a meet-and-greet with the team at Morrison Stadium.
