OMAHA, Neb. – Former Creighton men’s soccer players Andrew Ribeiro and Brian Holt have each recently inked Major League Soccer contracts.
Ribeiro (2009-12) signed with Chivas USA in late January while Holt (2007-11) signed with the Philadelphia Union in early February.
The signings come just weeks after two Bluejays were selected in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. Eric Miller (2011-13) was selected No. 5 overall by the Montreal Impact. D.C. United selected Zach Barnes (2012-13) with the No. 56 pick overall.
Ribeiro has played with Chivas USA's U-23 side since last fall when he joined former Creighton teammate Jose Gomez with the Chivas USA U-23s. He went on trial at notable Brazilian club Vasco da Gama last year. Ribeiro later returned to sign with USL PRO side Harrisburg City Islanders for the 2013 season. He played 24 league games for Harrisburg, scoring one goal as the team finished fourth. Ribeiro becomes the second player from the U-23 team to make the jump up to the senior team.
At Creighton, Ribeiro claimed First Team All-America honors in 2012. Additionally, during the college offseason he played for the Portland Timbers USL PDL side in 2012. He participated in the 2013 MLS Combine, and was drafted in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft by the New York Red Bulls (4th round, 70th pick overall). He trained with New York in the preseason, but was not offered a contract.
Philadelphia Union have signed goalkeeper Brian Holt. He has also spent time with Union affiliates Reading United A.C. (PDL) and the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL PRO). The Nebraska native played for Philadelphia’s PDL Affiliate partner Reading United A.C. in 2011, where he was an All-Eastern Conference selection and PDL Rookie of the Year finalist in his 16 starts with the club.
Holt signed with the Union’s USL PRO Affiliate partner Harrisburg City Islanders in 2012, a year after finishing his time at Creighton. He joins the Union after training with the club for much of last year and preseason this year.
As a senior at Creighton, Holt set an NCAA record with a .208 goals against average while leading the NCAA with 19 shutouts and a 92.3 save percentage. In 24 starts, Holt allowed just five goals in 2011, earning accolades as NSCAA All-America First-Team, College Cup All-Tournament Team, MVC Goalkeeper of the Year, College Soccer News All-America First-Team and a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist.
