Jose Gomez Finishes as Second Runner-Up for MAC Hermann Trophy
ST. LOUIS (Jan. 11) - Creighton men's senior Jose Gomez finished as the second runner-up for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy presented at the MAC Hermann Trophy Banquet Friday evening.
The award, annually given to the best soccer player in NCAA Division I soccer, was presented to junior forward Patrick Mullins from the University of Maryland. The first runner-up was Notre Dame forward Ryan Finley followed by Gomez.
Gomez' third-place finish follows former Creighton star Ethan Finlay's runner-up effort in 2011. Fellow Bluejay greats Keith DeFini, Brian Kamler, Richard Mulrooney, Ross Paule and Mike Tranchilla have also been finalists for the award, while current CU assistant coach Johnny Torres won the award in 1997.
Torres represented the Creighton coaching staff in support of Gomez this weekend. The former All-America selection returned to the MAC after claiming the award following his senior season in Omaha in 1997.
Earlier this month Gomez claimed Soccer America MVP First team honors as a midfielder. In December, Gomez claimed National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America First Team honors and All-Midwest Region accolades as well as a College Soccer News All-America team selection. The senior co-captain led the Bluejays to the College Cup in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history.
Gomez is the reigning 2012 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Year and 2012 MVC Tournament MVP after helping the Jays claim their 13th Valley tournament championship and 20th NCAA Tournament appearance.
The MAC Hermann Trophy represents the highest individual achievement in the sport. The winners and finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy are determined by a vote of Division I coaches who are members of the NSCAA. Also, an online fan vote (the equivalent of one coach's vote) is factored into the final vote total.
The 2013 adidas MLS Player Combine now awaits Gomez Jan. 11-15 at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He will be one of two Creighton seniors to participate this weekend, alongside classmate Andrew Ribeiro. All invited players will be eligible for selection in 2013 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas, which will take place on Jan. 17 in Indianapolis.
