OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton already knew it had clinched at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title following its 2-0 win over Missouri State on Wednesday night, but it needed a little help to clinch the title outright on Saturday. Following the Bluejays' first MVC loss of the season this afternoon in Omaha, a 2-1 defeat to Bradley, the Bluejays needed Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Missouri State to play to a draw tonight in Springfield, Mo., in order to own the title by themselves. SIUE and MSU did just what Creighton needed them to do, finishing the season with a scoreless draw.
Creighton's loss put it at 5-1-1 in MVC play, good for 16 points. The tie between SIUE and MSU put both of those squads at 4-1-2 inside Valley play, totalling 14 points each. The Bluejays are the top seed in the upcoming State Farm MVC Men's Soccer Championship hosted by Bradley in Peoria, Ill. As the top seed, the Jays earn a bye and will not play until a Friday semifinal. The title for Creighton is its 10th, more than twice as many as any other Valley program (SMU and Bradley both have four regular-season titles).
The 10th-ranked Bluejays will play the winner of No. 4-seed Drake (4-2-1) and No. 5-seed Bradley (3-3-1) on Friday after those teams meet on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Missouri State is the third seed and the Bears will play No. 6-seed Evansville (3-4-0) at 3 p.m., on Wednesday. The winner of that match will advance to play the second-seeded Cougars of SIUE on Friday at 3 p.m.
Creighton's first match in the tournament will be the second semifinal, kicking off at 6 p.m. on Friday.
