ST. LOUIS - Creighton's Ethan Finlayfinished
as the runner-up for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy
presented at the MAC Hermann Trophy Banquet Friday night. The award,
annually given to the best soccer player in NCAA Division I soccer, was
presented to Andrew Wenger of Duke.
Finlay, the first two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year
in school history, led Creighton and the MVC, ranking 12th in the NCAA
with 34 points and 13th in the nation with 14 goals in his senior
season. The Marshfield, Wis., native finished his career ranked fifth
in school history and seventh in league history with 43 career goals,
while he finished sixth in CU and 10th in MVC history with 103 career
points. Named and NSCAA First-Team All-America in 2011, he is one of
only three players in school history to twice earn All-America honors
from the NSCAA.
The former Bluejay forward set a league record in 2011 by earning MVC
Offensive Player of the Week honors five times. A three-time MVC
First-Teamer, he was also named the NSCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year
and a CoSIDA Academic All-American before earning his degree in finance
from Creighton in December.
His second-place finish is the highest finish in the MAC Hermann Trophy
voting by a Bluejay since Mike Tranchilla finished fourth in the voting
in 2002. Current Bluejay assistant coach Johnny Torres won both the
Hermann Trophy and the Missouri Athletic Club honor in 1997 before the
two awards were combined.
Finlay, who was in St. Louis for the banquet on Friday will now head to
the Major League Soccer Combine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. There he will
join his former Bluejay teammates Andrew Duran and Tyler Polak on the
adiPure team, while former teammate Greg Jordan is playing for the
adiPower squad at the combine which lasts until Jan. 10. The MLS
SuperDraft will take place on Thursday, Jan. 12 in Kansas City, Mo.
