Menís Soccer Battles Milwaukee to 0-0 Draw in Exhibition Match

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Creighton men’s soccer team battled Milwaukee to a 0-0 draw in an exhibition match at the Panthers’ Engelmann Stadium on a windy Sunday afternoon.

The Bluejays controlled most of the match outshooting Milwaukee 16-8 including nine shots on goal to just three by the Panthers. The teams decided not to play an overtime session in the preseason match.

Junior Timo Pitter led CU with three shots on goal while sophomore Fabian Herbers added two. UWM’s All-America selection Laurie Bell posted the Panthers’ trio of shots on goal.

Pitter had a chance to give Creighton the lead late in the match in the 84th minute, blasting a kick from 25 yards out. But Milwaukee goalkeeper Agustin Rey was able to touch save the ball near the crossbar as it rolled just over the top of the net.

CU junior goalkeeper Connor Sparrow played all 90 minutes in goal during the exhibition. Sparrow made a tough save on Bell in the 43rd minute as the Panther knocked a header towards the CU net off of a corner kick. Bell also just missed a score earlier in the half as his shot rebounded off the crossbar. Sparrow totaled three saves in the match.

Three other Bluejays joined Sparrow in playing every minute of the match including senior Jose Ribas, junior Eric DeJulio and freshman Lucas Stauffer. Overall, 16 Jays saw time on the pitch.

Creighton doubled up UWM in shots 8-4 in each half. Corners were even while CU posted five fewer fouls than Milwaukee. The Panthers received the only yellow card of the match in the 81st minute.

With the tie, Creighton remains undefeated in exhibition play under head coach Elmar Bolowich at 2-0-5. Overall, the Jays remain undefeated in their past 10 preseason matches with a 5-0-5 record.

The scoreless draw was the first for the Jays since a 0-0 double-overtime stalemate at Georgetown last year on Sept. 28.

The Jays host No. 21 Wisconsin in their final exhibition match on Friday at 7 p.m. CT inside Morrison Stadium.
