Men's Soccer Trio Named MVC Scholars

ST. LOUIS (Nov. 19) - For the third straight season three Creighton men's soccer players were named to the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Scholar-Athlete First Team, the league announced Monday.

Each student-athlete was a first-time recipient of the conference honor. The MVC recognized junior Bruno Castro, sophomore Eric Miller and classmate Jose Ribas. The trio of Bluejays on the first team is the most by any school in the Valley for 2012.

Castro has played in 19 matches this season, logging 16 starts. Earlier this month he earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-District VII First Team honors from CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). He is tied for sixth on the team with seven points on a pair of goals and three assists. His latest assist occurred on the Jays' first goal of the NCAA Tournament during a 4-2 win over Washington (Nov. 18). Castro netted the game-winning goal against Bradley (Oct. 20) after converting a penalty kick in the third minute of the 1-0 win. The marketing major carries a 3.67 grade point average.

Miller has started all 18 contests for the Jays this season in which he has played. Like Castro, he earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-District VII First Team honors from CoSIDA. Miller garnered recognition on the All-MVC First Team this season after an MVC All-Freshman Team selection last year. He scored his first career goal and added a third career assist in a 3-2 double overtime win over Drake in the MVC Semifinals (Nov. 9). As a result he claimed a 2012 MVC All-Tournament Team selection and earned his first MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor (Nov. 15). Miller has played 90 or more minutes in 14 matches in 2012. Earlier this fall he joined the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team, playing over 220 minutes in three matches at the Marbella Cup in Spain. The business major owns a 3.71 GPA.

Ribas, a 2012 All-MVC Second Team member, has started all 21 games for the Jays this season. He posted two assists in 90 minutes of action during a 4-2 win over No. 21 Washington on Nov. 18. Ribas recorded his seventh assist on CU's go-ahead goal and his eighth helper of 2012 on the Jays' game-winning score. Ribas' pair of assists tied him for first overall in the MVC with eight total. He has posted four assists over the past four matches and ranks third on the team with 12 points (two goals, eight assists) this season. Ribas ranks third on the squad with 16 shots on goal this season. A three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week in 2012, Ribas carries a 3.60 GPA in business.

The No. 12-seeded Bluejays will travel to No. 5-seeded Akron for an NCAA Third Round match on Sunday, Nov. 25 at 3:30 p.m. CT. Links to a live video stream and live stats will be made available on GoCreighton.com on the men's soccer schedule page prior to the match.
