ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) recognized senior Andrew Ribeiro and sophomore Jose Gomez as Players of the Week honors after helping the Bluejays to the Ameritas Classic Championships last weekend. Ribeiro was named MVC Defensive Player of the Week, while Gomez claimed the MVC Offensive Player of the Week.
This the first MVC Player of the Week award for both Ribeiro and Gomez.
Ribeiro was named the Ameritas Classic MVP for his dominating defensive effort against No. 7 Akron and Rutgers last weekend. After playing as a midfielder his first three season, Ribeiro is playing as a primary defender for the first time this season. Ribeiro did not leave the field for Creighton in either the draw with Akron (1-1 on Aug. 31) or the win over Rutgers (3-0 on Sept. 2). His defensive work helped the Jays hold their two opponents to just one goal in 200 minutes.
Gomez tied for the team lead with three points (one goal, one assist) in Creighton's 1-0-1 showing at the Ameritas Classic this weekend. He tallied the assist in the Jays' 1-1 draw with No. 7 Akron on Friday. Gomez drew two defenders away from junior Sean Kim with an initial blast that deflected to Kim, who capitalized to give Creighton a 1-0 lead. Against Rutgers on Sunday, Gomez opened the offensive floodgates for the Jays by converting a direct kick from 20 yards out to give the Bluejays a 1-0 edge. Gomez's goal proved to be the game-winner as the Jays went on to claim the 3-0 victory.
Creighton finished the Ameritas Classic with 1-0-1 record, claiming the championship via the first tiebreaker goal differential. The Jays finished +3 for the tournament (4 goals scored, 1 allowed). The win over Rutgers (3-0, Sept. 2) and draw with No. 7 Akron (1-1, Aug. 31) also extended Creighton's home unbeaten streak to 18 matches. Creighton last loss at Morrison Stadium came to Valley rival Bradley on Nov. 6, 2010 (L, 1-2).
The Bluejays (2-0-1) hit the road for two matches this week as Creighton travels to California to face Santa Clara on Friday, Sept 7 at 9 p.m., then faces Saint Mary's (RV) on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m.
